The challenges are pretty much the same everywhere. Personally, this was my route for going professional

• I spent several years (close to/over a decade) having it as a hobby
• Spent a good amount of time with likeminded people (Discussions, new ideas, critique)
• Once I had a basic portfolio, started working on my portfolio - hobby images generally do not make the cut
• Improving your portfolio(keeping it updated) is always a work in progress (its essential to do it periodically)
• Build your online presence, get to know what people like
• Keep learning, evolving
• Learn to price your offerings (remember you also need to upgrade your equipment along your journey)
